How to upsell or cross-sell a different product VARIANT of the same product

In this guide, we'll show you how to encourage a customer to upgrade to a different product variant in your Shopify store.

With Upsell Wizard for Shopify, you can entice customers to select a different variant within the same or another product. You can also encourage customers to select a different product entirely, but that's covered in this support article.

There are two types of offer funnels you can create with Upsell Wizard:

Upsell Funnels

Will REPLACE the original trigger product or variant in the cart with the one the customer previously selected. For example, if a customer was about to purchase a small plush toy for $7.99, you could offer them a large version for $9.99 to increase your order value.

Cross-sell Funnels

Will ADD an additional product or variant to the cart, along with the original trigger product that was previously selected. For example, if a customer was about to purchase coffee beans, you could offer them coffee filters, in addition to their beans, and increase your order value.

Cross-selling a specific product variant on Shopify

In this example, we'll set up an offer funnel to upsell a different product variant, when the customer selects a specific variant on one of our products. Specifically, we'll upsell a 2 LB bag of coffee when a customer selects a 1 LB bag.

To begin, we'll create a new upsell funnel and set our trigger variant as 1 LB / Whole Bean of our "house blend" product.

Next, we'll select the series layout, but you could do this with a list if you wanted to show multiple offers in a list layout to customers. Both series and list layouts support multiple products, but in this example, we'll only be showing the customer a single offer so both layout options will work.

To configure our funnel offer we'll select the plus symbol and select our offer variant.

Then, we'll add an offer product variant in our Upsell Wizard funnel to act as the upsell item. In this example, we're offering the customer a 2 LB bag of coffee when they select a 1 LB bag.

Lastly, we can customize the text of our offer to entice customers to make the switch and enable our funnel to make it live.

Testing Your Offer

To test your upsell funnel, add the trigger product variant to your cart. You will see the offer variant appear on your product page or in the cart, depending on your funnel settings in Upsell Wizard.

Finally, add the upsell offer variant by selecting "Add to cart," and continue to checkout. The original item should be replaced with the new upsell item the customer selected.

Note: If you selected the cross-sell funnel type when setting up your funnel then the original product should also remain in the cart and be visible at checkout.
